Fiji said to have a long way to go before elections in March 2009

The chairman of the Forum Regional Security Committee chairman believes Fiji has a long way yet to go in terms of meeting its own deadline of a March 2009 general elections.

The meeting saw the tabling of progress reports from governmental and civil society groups on security issues in the region.

John Adank could not elaborate on the documents, but it is understood that both RAMSI and the working group on Fiji delegates were amongst those who presented progress reports.

"It's clear that there is obivious there is some way to go yet to meet the requirements the Forum members have sought from Fiji in relation to holding an election by March 2009."
