The vital role of women in conflict resolution and maintaining peace and has been acknowledged by the Forum Regional Security Committee.

The committee ended a two-day meeting in Suva on Friday.

Committee chair, New Zealander John Adank, said there were already lessons from the region that programmes by committee members could take advantage of.

Mr Adank says no one should overlook the role women played in ending the ethnic tensions in Solomon Islands.

"The point was made that in many cases when men were sent as envoys they were not trusted by the different sides, whereas women, in light of their different traditional roles were considered more neutral players in the discussions that took place."
