New Niue MP says better housing a key to raising population

One of Niue's newest Legislative Assembly members, Mahetoi Hekau, says improving the country's housing stock would encourage overseas-based Niueans to return home.

Mrs Hekau was one of three new common roll members to be elected in last weekend's poll.

She says stemming the flow of Niueans to New Zealand and encouraging overseas Niueans to return home will be her top priority as an assembly member.

"Focussing on the quality of housing and the lifestyle here will work its way of getting people to come back and I think the next best thing is if they dont' come back to live they at least come back regularly."
