Niue caretaker deputy premier says legislative assembly too large

9:35 am on 10 June 2008

Niue's legislative assembly is too big according to the nation's caretaker deputy premier Fisa Pihigia.

Mr Pihigia says having twenty paid representatives for just 600 electors is unnecessary and that a limit should be placed on the number of terms politicians can serve.

Mr Pihigia would also like to see changes to the size of cabinet.

"There's a lot of work to be done by just four cabinet ministers. So there's a lot of things where the constitution needs to change first to make those things happen."

Negotiations on forming a new Government in Niue are continuing.
