The Papua New Guinea National Roads Authority has been told to come up with ways to raise funds for road maintenance.
The Transport, Works and Civil Aviation Minister, Don Polye, says a minimum of around 100 million kina, or 37 million US dollars, is needed.
He says road user charges similar to those applied in other countries may need to be adopted but tailored to suit the PNG environment.
Mr Polye says this could be an increased levy on petrol or diesel but he is mindful that the cost of fuel is already soaring, so forms of road tax need to be explored..
"And that is where the 12 gauge and the weighbridges and so forth come in. And in fact I have got some of those equipments already in the country, like the weighbridge, that we would like to establish in Lae, so that way monitor and control weights and at the same time place charges."
