Fiji's Lautoka Mill shuts down

10:54 am on 13 June 2008

Fiji's largest sugar mill shut down operations this week barely 12 hours after reopening on Tuesday.

Lautoka Mill was forced to halt operations at 6am when the water level in a boiler tank reached critical levels as a result of a faulty meter.

On Wednesday the factory shut down after experiencing teething problems.

Mill general manager Ali Ubadutt told the Fiji Times the crush progressed well until the boiler problem occured.

Mr Ubadutt said they shut down the boilers to prevent any damage to other plants and engineers recalibrated the meter to ensure the problem would not reoccur.
