Veteran Vanuatu MP Sela Molisa says he was surprised to be headhunted for the chairmanship of the Independent Monitoring Group for the Fiji People's Charter for Change, Peace and Progress.
Mr Molisa was appointed as the new IMG chair by Fiji's President, Ratu Josefa Iloilo yesterday.
He replaces Geert van der Linden who resigned last month, citing personal commitments
The role of the IMG is to monitor the PCCPP process and provide Ratu Josefa with an independent report on its integrity, transparency and robustness.
Mr Molisa says he didn't apply for the IMG position, and was initially shocked to be approached recfently by Melanesian leaders to take on the role:
"But during the MSG summit here in Vila three weeks ago, the interim Prime Minister of Fiji asked the Melanesian countries to get someone to go over and my name came up. So when they contacted me I said in principle, yeah, I had no objection."
