A Forum planning to set up a Transparency International chapter in Tonga has welcomed the announcement of the Kingdom's first anti-corruption commissioner, Neil Adsett.

A joint working group was set up in April to accelerate the establishment of the independent office.

The commission's office was opened last week in the capital, Nuku'alofa.

Mr Adsett said during the opening, its primary goal was to investigate suspected wrong doings and bring corrupt public officials to account to create better governance in Tonga.

The interim chairman of the Forum, Pesi Fonua, says he is pleased the government has moved quickly on this issue.

But he says there will be a lot of work head for not only the Commission but also his group.

"You know it's not going to be easy, and with us coming along, I think we can compliment each other and work towards making it happen because it's one thing setting all of these things but the hard part is getting it to work."
