A woman in Papua New Guinea has died after being beaten over a period of eight hours by her husband.

The Post Courier newspaper reports that police in PNG's second largest city, Lae, are today searching for the husband, who has fled town and is in hiding.

The paper says neighbours tried to stop the attack, which started on Saturday night and ended in the woman's death on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, a notorious criminal has been shot dead after killing a policeman in a gun battle in Wewak at the weekend.

The Post Courier quotes police saying the death of Vincent Malara, who was wanted for six armed robberies, ended a reign of terror.

Malara was wearing a PNG Defence Force issue bulletproof vest and used a military-issue firearm during the gunbattle.
