10:41 am on 20 June 2008

The New Zealand foreign minister, Winston Peters, has told a select committee that his ministry's efforts will increasingly focus on the Pacific.

Detailing plans to expand the number of missions across the globe, Mr Peters says the main thrust will be on the Pacific, with a new aid strategy to be released next week.

"The Pacific is the new focus of aid for this country and also foreign affairs itself. This is allowing us to make a sustainable impact on improving health and education in the Pacific to address infrastructure gaps and promote economic growth and improve governance and leadership."
