UNHCR calls for openness on World Refugee Day

4:13 pm on 19 June 2008

New United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees figures show the number of refugees has risen by 1.5 million in 2007 compared to the year before.

The annual report was released this week to coincide with tomorrow's World Refugee Day.

The regional representative, Richard Towle, says conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have contributed to the increase in refugees.

Mr Towle says people in the region must help to protect these refugees and leave their doors open to shelter them.

"Most of the world's refugees are living in places just immediately over the borders of their own countries, so the international burden of looking after the world's refugees really falls on the most vulnerable states. Countries can help by providing financial support and providing political support."
