Farmer groups in PNG's Highlands region have called on the Government for urgent action to eradicate the parasitic mite which poses a serious threat to the honey bee industry.

The National newspaper reports the mite is also threatening food and agricultural industries.

Steven Kotene of the President of the Eastern Highlands Co-operative Societies Association said that the livelihood of many rural farmers would be at stake if nothing was done quickly to solve the problem.
