The New Zealand foreign minister, Winston Peters, has restated his government's commitment to help secure a reliable shipping service to Tokelau.

The atolls' only links with the outside world is being maintained by a ship to the Samoan capital, Apia.

Mr Peters has told a parliamentary select committee that he hopes he will be able to say soon that there will be a new boat.

"One that will go for 25 years and uphold the special commitment we have to that country and also our reputation in the United Nations, just in case one of them decides to go there."
