American Samoan cannery shuts for a week

1:38 pm on 20 June 2008

More than 2,000 employees of the Samoa Packing tuna cannery in American Samoa will lose more than a week's salary when the cannery shuts down for major maintenance work next week.

This is a scheduled annual shutdown for Samoa Packing.

The General Manager, Willie Martin, said the last day of production will be Friday and the cannery will shut down for just over a week.

He says several maintenance jobs will be carried out during the closure.

Whenever one of the two canneries closes, retailers experience a downturn in business.
