Fiji told its conservation sector is in crisis

A report by the Austral Foundation says Fiji's conservation sector is in crisis.

This, the report says, is despite millions of dollars being provided annually to protect Fiji's biodiversity.

The report was presented at this year's Pacific Islands Roundtable on Nature Conservation at the University of the South Pacific in Suva.

The Roundtable chair and International Union for Conservation Nature director, Taholo Kami, says the report was a wake up call for the entire region, and that there was a need for a more holistic approach to conservation.

"If Fiji is still being assessed as having some problems then it is a wake up call for the rest of our countries. So we recognise that there are some real issues and we recognise that, yes, that the NGOs are doing some fantastice work but we need to do more."
