Solomons to celebrate independence without fireworks

3:00 pm on 2 July 2008

There will be no fireworks when Solomon Islands celebrates its 30th anniversary of independence because they won't arrive in time.

Shipping delays will prevent fireworks ordered from Australia making it to the capital Honiara in time for independence day on Monday.

Public holidays have been set aside to remember the Solomons' move to self-government in 1976 and its full independence from Britain on July the 7th 1978.

A government spokesman says the fireworks were ordered from Australia but the ship will not arrive in time and they can't be flown in.
