Tonga chooses New Zealander as police commissioner

5:11 pm on 2 July 2008

A fourth Pacific country is to have a New Zealander heading its police services.

Radio Tonga reports Chris Kelly has been named as the new commissioner in Tonga.

He joins colleagues who currently lead the police forces in Solomon Islands, Niue and the Cook Islands.

Mr Kelly's appointment is part of an agreement by both Australia and New Zealand to bolster the development of Tonga's police.

Tonga's Police Minister, Siaosi Taimani 'Aho, says the aid will allow for improvements in key areas, particularly in leadership and the promotion of law and order.

Mr Kelly has more than 30 years policing experience.
