Commonwealth envoy meets Fiji's ousted SDL

3:13 pm on 3 July 2008

One on one talks are taking place this week between Fiji's political parties and the Commonwealth Secretary General's Representative, Sir Paul Reeves.

Sir Paul is using the talks to establish the terms of reference for a political forum earmarked to take place next month.

It's hoped all Fiji's political parties will attend to discuss the way forward after the military commander overthrew the elected government and closed parliament in 2006.

Dr Tupeni Baba from the ousted SDL party says the talks with Sir Paul went well and covered a range of political issues, not just electoral reform as proposed by Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

He believes that Fiji's other political parties also wish to discuss a range of issues and the interim administration's focus on electoral reform has left him concerned that the forum will be used as an excuse to delay next year's elections.

"A lot of people are saying that this is only an attempt by the interim government to delay the promise of a return for a democratic elections 2009 but we are very mindful of the fact that we hope to be going to the polls March 209 or thereabouts and we don't want things to drag, we don't want this to be an excuse to push the timeline - that would be not suitable for us."
