Fiji Water complains over increases in excise duties

6:40 pm on 4 July 2008

The makers of Fiji Waters have complained about what they say are onerous increases in excise and export duties on bottled water from Fiji.

The company says the interim government is planning to add a tax of 20 Fiji cents a litre to their product yet carbonated drinks makers only pay three cents a litre.

It says the excise appears unprecedented anywhere in the world with most nation actively encouraging exports of this kind with generous incentives.

It says the proposed action will weaken the Fiji bottled water industry's ability to compete internationally and lead to a cut export revenue for the country.
