Fiji Times replaces deported publisher

9:42 am on 5 July 2008

The Fiji Times has appointed an acting chief executive and publisher to replace Evan Hannah, who was deported from the country by the interim government in May.

The newspaper says Rex Gardiner was publisher and general manager of the Fiji Times from 1985 to 1988.

He says the appointment is not forever, but it is important for the parent company, News Limited, to get someone on the ground immediately.

He says the Fiji Times is a fine company of wonderful people working through all sorts of trying circumstances.
