Former police officer in Samoa denies murder charge

A former police officer in Samoa, Tiumalumanaia Filipo Langkilde, has entered a not guilty plea to a charge of first degree murder at a preliminary hearing in the Supreme Court.

Langkilde was charged by police early last month following the death of a man alleged to have been involved in a marital affair with his wife.

The woman and her children have been banished from the village of Elise fou as a result of the killing.

The police say the accused had killed the deceased using a sharp object.

The court has also heard the former police officer was previously serving a jail sentence for violence related offences and was released two years ago.

The prosecution is strongly opposed to the defence lawyers' application to have the accused released on bail until the trial now set for June next year.
