Fiji Law Society calls for new political leaders

4:13 pm on 18 July 2008

The president of the Fiji Law Society says no member of the interim government or the government it deposed should contest the next general election.

Isireli Fa made the suggestion at the opening of the three-day Fiji Law Society Annual Convention and South Pacific Law Conference in Nadi.

The Fijilive website quotes Mr Fa as saying that instead they should put forward new leaders.

Mr Fa also suggested that public servants sacked by the interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama following his 2006 coup be returned to their posts.

He has also called for a Commission of Inquiry to investigate allegations of corruption since the 1987 coup.

He says the judiciary should act quickly in the ousted prime minister Laisenia Qarase's case against the interim government.
