There is a new surge of interest in the teaching profession in American Samoa and the Department of Education director, Dr. Claire Poumele, puts it down to the improved pay structure.

The wage law, which was signed on June 25th, set new salaries for teachers based on certification and qualifications.

The hike in pay is due to start from this month.

Dr Poumele says there has been an increase in local interest for teaching positions and the DOE, which has had problems recruiting and retaining teachers in the past, and welcomes the interest.
