Reports from Fiji say the interim prime minister, Commodore Bainimarama, has succeeded in persuading the former permanent secretary in the prime minister's office to return to the job.
Parmesh Chand resigned last week for reasons which have not been made public.
Shortly afterwards, Commodore Bainimarama asked Mr Chand to return to the position.
Radio Fiji says it has been told by Commodore Bainimarama that Mr Chand will take up the job again.
After the resignation, the Public Service Commission chairman, Rishi Ram, said it would put in place a recruitment processes for a replacement.
