Bougainville prepares for Presidential election

6:17 am on 28 July 2008

Officials in the autonomous Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville have begun updating the electoral rolls ahead of an election for President following the death last month of Joseph Kabui.

No date has been set for the poll, but the acting President, John Tabinaman, says the national Government has said it will provide funding of 3.6 million kina or about 1.4 million US dollars to assist the election process.

"Immediately the funds are released then we should conduct awareness and conduct training for the polling officials. In the meantime we are working on updating our common roll so that when those things are in place then we can set a date for the issuance of the writ."
