Fiji's interim PM to attend coronation in Tonga

2:44 pm on 28 July 2008

Fiji says the interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, will lead the Fiji delegation to Tonga's coronation of King George Tupou V.

Commodore Bainimarama will be accompanied by his wife, the foreign minister Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and protocol staff.

Fiji's president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, who preceded and succeeded Commodore Bainimarama as president, won't be present in Nuku'alofa.

The Prime Minister's Office permanent secretary, Parmesh Chand, who is back in his job after resigning earlier this month, says this week's coronation is a ceremonious occasion.

Mr Chand has told the Fiji Times that there are formalities but no meetings or specific presentation from Fiji.

He says Fiji is not only a close neighbour but also has had historical links.
