Vanuatu election officials are vetting potential candidates ahead of the general election due in September.

331 candidate applications have been received and the Principal Electoral Officer Martin Tete says they are currently checking the candidates against sections of the People's Representation Act of 2007.

"The electoral commissioner will meet by the eighth of August to check on all the applications and the announcement of the qualified candidates should be made on the eleventh of August 2008."

Last week, the Chairman of the Melanesian Progressive Party, Barak Sope, launched a challenge to the Act that could have delayed the elections.

Mr Tete has confirmed the elections will go ahead on September the 2nd.
