Samoa Aids Foundation calls for open discussions to stem disease

1:14 pm on 6 August 2008

The director of the Samoa AIDS Foundation says political and church leaders have to start talking openly about men who have sex with men, and sex workers, in order to contain the disease.

Ken Moala has asked the International AIDS Conference in Mexico City how many more deaths will there be before political and church leaders dare to recognise and talk directly about men who have sex with men and about sex workers.

And the International AIDS Society President, Dr Pedro Cahn, says it is a time for political courage - not political expediency.

He says this means fighting gender inequality, homophobia and poverty, which continue to drive the epidemic.
