US urges Samoa to move away from fossil fuel use

3:19 pm on 6 August 2008

The United States has urged Samoa to look at alternative energy sources.

The departing US ambassador to Samoa, William McCormick, says Samoa should be encouraged to work on new ways to produce energy.

He says Samoa has sun and wind in abundance and these natural sources have great potential for the whole Pacific region.

He says solar and wind energy are free and are not carbon producing.

Mr McCormick says the US, which is the world's biggest per capita energy consumer, supports each country's efforts to be independent of fossil fuels.
