Three bridges in Samoa deemed unsafe

2:03 pm on 7 August 2008

Reports from Samoa say there is concern that three bridges are unsafe.

The World Bank has reportedly pointed out deficiencies with bridges in Malaemalu and Poutasi villages in Falealili district and one in the village of Lano on Savaii Island.

The three bridges were designed by a foreign company and built by local contractors.

Sources say about 800,000 US dollars has been wasted because the bridges fail to meet high infrastructure standards set by the World Bank.

The reports say the World Bank is strongly recommending to the government of Samoa that it take action.
