Final approvals for American Samoa's undersea fibre optic cable

American Samoa's Project Notification Review System Board has approved a land use permit for the undersea fibre optic project.

The board reviewed the environmental impact of the project at a meeting yesterday and gave approval with conditions.

The board requires the the cable developer keep local regulatory agencies informed of how the project progresses and how they are complying with requirements of federal agencies that have an interest in the area where the cable will be laid

The panel heard that the project is schedueld to come on line in March 2009.

Local construction company Samoa Maritime has been selected to lay the section of cable on land.

The undersea portion of the cable will be laid by an off island company.
