Solomons government denies defeated no confidence motion came from the people

The Solomons Islands government has denied claims by the parliamentary opposition that the motion of no confidence moved in parliament last week was from the majority of the people.

The claim of popular support was made by the mover of the motion, Isa'ac Inoke, the leader of the Opposition, Manasseh Sogavare, and the Deputy Opposition Leader, Japhet Waipora.

But the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation says speakers from the government claim their people do not support such a motion.

The Prime Minister, Dr Derek Sikua, said the majority of Solomon Islanders favour the current government under his leadership.

Mr Sikua said Solomon Islands was destined to a gloomy picture under the former leadership.

The No confidence motion was defeated 39 votes to 8 with one absence
