3:57 pm on 13 August 2008

Two inmates who escaped from American Samoa's Tafuna Correctional Facility at the weekend have been recaptured.

A prison warden, Fuega Moliga, says a police search party found 18-year-old Joseph Mamona and 20-year-old Derek Ropati sleeping in a deserted shack early this morning.

The acting Commissioner of Public Safety, Filifaatali Mike Fuiava, is relieved the two detainees are back in custody.

He says many police hours were spent looking for them.

The two have now been placed in the jail's maximum security cells.

Mr Mamona is facing an armed robbery charge and Mr Ropati is charged with second degree murder.

Both will now also be charged with escaping confinement.
