10:42 am on 15 August 2008

Police in the Solomon Islands capital, Honiara, have taken the unprecedented step of releasing the names of people with outstanding arrest warrants to the media.

The first batch contains 179 names but around three thousand are likely to be made public.

Some of the outstanding warrants date back to the 1970s.

The Director of Police Prosecutions, George Suri, says they want to encourage those with warrants to come forward to police.
