The Forum Fisheries Agency in Solomon Islands has welcomed the new computer network system installed in the Maritime unit and launched on Friday.

The more than 86-thousand US dollar computer upgrade will allow Solomon Islands Police Force to monitor and respond immediately to illegal fishing, transnational crime, and sea rescue missions.

The Director of the Fisheries Operations, Luatutu Andre Volentras, says 10-billion US dollars has been lost in the past ten years through illegal fishing.

"We can sort of see what's happening to fishing vessels across a wide area of ocean, and that's a lot more efficient than going out on a patrol boat I guess and searching vast expanses hoping to find the vessels"
