Fiji interim government blames NZ for forum boycott

10:44 am on 19 August 2008

The Fiji interim government is blaming New Zealand for its decision to boycott today's Pacific Island Forum meeting.

Fiji's interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama says New Zealand and Australia are unfairly picking on Fiji at the expense of unity among Pacific island countries.

New Zealand's Prime Minister, Helen Clark, has criticised the Commodore's non attendance; claiming it was a smokescreen for not fronting up to Pacific leaders about plans to return Fiji to democracy.

Fiji's interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says that's just not true

"The Prime Ministers speech actually has been forwarded, what he was going to present to the forum, has already been forwarded through our foreign affairs, we've also written in response to the ministerial contact group that was here, to the chair of the forum, and we assume he will be forwarding that correspondence from the Prime Minister to the other forum leaders, so in respect of the material persay, it will reach the forum."

Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says Helen Clark's assesment of hte situation in Fiji has been wrong many times.
