Niue wants Pacific help to resettle Tuvaluans

The Premier of Niue, Toke Talagi, wants the wider Pacific to assist Tuvaluans to move to Niue amid the growing threat to their atolls from climate change.

Climate change is the theme for this week's Pacific Islands Forum summit on Niue and Mr Talagi says his country is ready to do is encourage more Tuvaluans to settle.

About 100 Tuvaluans have previously moved to Niue and Mr Talagi says they have got on extremely well with locals.

But he says the resettlement has been poorly resourced and he wants the Forum to consider a better approach.

"And therefore i believe there is an opportunity for us to redress that and ensure that we in fact provide the appropriate resources to enable Niueans to determine what they wish with respect to the Tuvaluans and same thing with the Tuvaluans."

Mr Talagi says land for lease to the Tuvaluans has not been an issue so far but if greater numbers arrive then this is a matter that would need to be addressed.

If the Tuvaluans were to come in significant numbers it would solve Niue's most pressing problem - underpopulation.
