Nine women to contest Vanuatu election

3:44 pm on 20 August 2008

A Vanuatu women's group says nine women standing in the next elections is a good start, but they will need a lot of support.

There are more than 300 candidates in the elections, due to go ahead on September the 2nd.

The President of the Port Vila town council of women, Lesline Malsungai, says women don't stand for the elections because they don't have enough confidence.

"But the number of women we have for this coming election it's quite enough for us to cover what we want a woman to do, but of course, we have a lot of tasks to prepare them."

Lesline Malsungai says she is confident the nine can all win their seats.
