Niue health director says isolation only option to contain HIV

4:04 pm on 21 August 2008

The Health Director of Niue, Dr Sitaleki Finau says isolating people infected with HIV/AIDS is the only way left for the Pacific to deal with the spread of the disease.

Dr Finau is suggesting people infected with HIV/AIDS be segregated into their own colonies.

He says the transmission of HIV/AIDS in the Pacific has increased exponentially over the past 20 years and no other process has been effective in reducing it .

He says isolation could be the answer.

"That would isolate the source of infection. It will also isolate the transmission. But the details we can work out, for example, they visit their own family -it's obvious they're not going to have sex with one of their family members. So, going to families, families visiting, all those kinds of stuff."

Dr Sitaleki Finau says he will be putting his idea forward to the powers that it be, to consider it.
