More than 100 union members strike for suspended colleague to be reinstated

More than 100 staff union members from the University of the South Pacific in Fiji have staged a strike to help reinstate a colleague who has been suspended for 108 days.

The USP Union members walked off the job for three hours yesterday in support of library staff member Simione Kuruvoli.

Mr Kuruvoli was suspended in May for a serious misconduct issue which is still unresolved.

The USP Staff Union's secretary, Litiana Waqalevu, says USP management has not given a fair reason for the lengthy suspension and has dishonoured a deal.

"After we negotiated with USP, they refused to bring him back after four attempts of our request to bring him back, because of the fact they had breached our agreement. Our agreement says 28 days and Simione was out on 108 days."
