Solomon Islands to discuss political reform

7:32 pm on 25 August 2008

The Solomon Islands Government is holding a two day workshop from tomorrow to look for solutions to political instability.

Issues up for discussion include weak parliamentary majorities, the excessive power of the executive, weak controls on MPs, the societal pressures on the members and foreign influence.

It is part of an ongoing process to decide how the country can achieve parliamentary and political party reform.

The Speaker of Parliament Sir Peter Kenilorea will present the keynote address, and other speakers will include retired judge Frank Kabui, Dr John Roughan, Dr Alice Pollard and Dr Transform Agorau.
