MPs in Tonga want answers over latest power price hikes

Tonga's number one people's representative says a parliamentary group will visit Tonga Power this week to discuss an overnight rise in electricity charges.

Tonga Power has increased its tariffs by 23 percent to offset rising fuel costs and to cover other expenses, such as workers' salaries.

This follows a 21 percent power increase six months ago.

Akilisi Pohiva says he doesn't understand why Tonga Power had to raise its tariff so much.

"The news came as a big surprise. A group from parliament will have to visit Tonga Power sometime this week to have a look at the very reason why that big increase is being done."

Akilisi Pohiva hopes Tonga Power will reduce its tariff, because he says most people won't be able to cope with another electricity price increase.
