French high commission in New Caledonia denounces USTKE school blockades

The French high commission in New Caledonia has criticised this week's action by the USTKE union, saying the intimidation and sabotage by its members don't amount to normal union practices.

This comes after disruptions at a number of high schools which were blockaded in protest at the hiring of a deputy principal from France.

The union claims that local candidates should have been considered for the position in line with the transfer of power envisaged by the Noumea Accord on greater autonomy.

In Noumea, security forces intervened to lift a blockade of the TDF transmission centre where equipment has been damaged.
