Tongans will gain significant control over their intellectual property from next week.

The Tonga Broadcasting Commission reports Penisimani Latu, of the Ministry of Labour, Commerce & Industries, saying the Intellectual Property Rights Act will come into effect on September 1st.

He says the Act will protect the intellectual property of actors, songwriters, storytellers and others.

It will give them rights to distribute this material and decide who can use it.
