Solomon Islands Parliament has passed a bill to set up aTruth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate atrocities committed during the ethnic tension.

Five members, three of whom will be expatriates will soon be appointed by the Prime Minister to run the commission.

The government has reassured parliamentthat the workings of the commission would not interfere with ethnic tension criminal cases or amnesty provisions already granted.

Acting Attorney General Gabriel Suri says the commission will operate independently from the criminal courts.
