Ramu management in PNG denies work stoppage

3:42 pm on 1 September 2008

Management at the Ramu Nickel project in Papua New Guinea's Madang province denies that there's been a work stoppage at the mine site.

An official statement from Ramu NiCo says PNG media reports in the weekend that Chinese workers at the site had fled after recent attacks by locals, are false.

This follows an attack by 100 armed local employees and landowners on three Chinese workers employed by China's state-owned Metallurgical Construction Company at the Ramu site a week ago.

Management says that while construction is ongoing, consultations are being conducted with workers who have security concerns.

Meanwhile, PNG's Mineral Resources Authority says that the Ramu memorandum of agreement review is starting today.
