There are reports that a large number of people left off Vanuatu's electoral roll has sparked in a violent protest at the country's electoral office.

Staff say a group of about 50 men crowded into the office and assaulted an official.

They say the men, from various parties, were complaining that 800 people were left off the roll.

Officials say they've investigated and most of those people had voted.

The electoral office downplayed the protest, saying it was only a minor incident.
