The Governor of the Northern Marianas, Governor Benigno Fitial, has extended the state of disaster emergency over the territokry's ongoing power shortages.

He says the failure of the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation to supply reliable power services continues to pose a risk to people's health and safety.

In an executive order the Governor also suspended safety, environmental and other regulations that apply to the installation of new generators which have arrived this week.

Saipan has been suffering long power outages for weeks as engineers struggled to keep the old generators running.
