Vanuatu experiences major quake

7:49 pm on 8 September 2008

A earthquake measuring 6.6 on the richter scale hit to the south of Vanuatu about 2pm today local time.

Geoscience Australia said the undersea quake was centred about 200 kilometres south of Port Vila between Vanuatu and New Caledonia.

The agency reports that the tremor would have been felt in some of the southern Vanuatu islands but the radius of the quake zone meant it was unlikely to have caused any damage on land.
