Work on a building site in American Samoa has been halted after McConnell Dowell employees unearthed demolition charges and detonators in Fagatogo during excavation activities in support of a US Army Corps of Engineers contract.

The $1.3 million contract requires excavation work on the Permanent Landslide Repair in Fagatogo.

Negotiations are underway with the local Army Reserve and government agencies to have an army disposal unit from Hawaii to clear the area.

The team is expected to arrive on-island this weekend.
